Draw Longitudinal Profile

Use this function to present the longitudinal profile for the alignment of the active model (road, railway, channel, etc.).

  • Presentation for the desired section of the alignment
  • Terrain profile is read from the active model (road, railway, channel, etc.) and has two choice
    1. With Breaklines: Calculated sections (i.e., standard interval or extra chainages) and the terrain breakpoints are considered
    2. Without Breaklines: Only the calculated sections are considered
      • Wireframes are presented as terrain surface
  • Existing objects/elements such as the following that were active in the DTM at the instance of calculating/building the model (road, railway, channel, etc.) can also be included in the profile presentation
    • Wire-frames crossing the alignment
    • Other alignments crossing the alignment
    • External alignments - the vertical geometry of desired alignments can be projected to the profile being presented
    • Existing objects such as pipes, cables, culverts, etc., crossing the alignment
    • Terrain profile at an offset from the alignment (left side and/or right side)
    • Rehabilitation
    • See 'Illustration - Profile' and 'Existing Objects/Elements'for further details on these elements
  • The parameters related to tunnel profile lines are defined at 'From other Novapoint Modules'
    • Include additional elements/objects from Novapoint Water and Sewer Module
  • Drawing Style - Option to choose the profile drawing style

Procedure

Open the dialog 'Draw Longitudinal Profile from Road Model'

MOUS_ICO Toolbar: Tunnel: Draw Longitudinal Profile Draw Longitudinal Profile…
MOUS_ICO Menu: Tunnel > Draw Longitudinal Profile…

The active model (road, railway, channel, etc.) and start/end chainages (extents) of its alignment are displayed at 'Model Info'. To change the model (road, railway, channel, etc.), exit the function and run the function 'Project ID'.

  1. Longitudinal Profile Settings - define 'Start Chainage' and 'Datum'
    • These two parameter refer the lower left corner of the inner frame (profile area) - see frame for inner frame
    • Start chainage of the alignment is the default value but can be out side the start chainage of alignment
    • Define the insertion point - see frame
    • Pick the insertion point using the ellipse button (Pick) OR key-in the coordinates at 'X' and 'Y'
  2. Frame Settings
    • Define 'Frame Length', 'Frame Height', and 'Vertical Exaggeration'
    • Start chainage, datum, frame length, frame height, and vertical exaggeration define the inner frame - see frame
  3. Alignment Chainage Settings - define the section of alignment for profile presentation
    • Default section - extents of inner frame i.e., from start chainage (defined at 'Longitudinal Profile Settings') to start chainage plus frame length (defined at 'Frame Settings')
    • Use these options to change the section from that of inner frame
    • The values can be outside the inner frame / extents of alignment but profile shall be limited to the extents of alignment
    • Preview of profile area is displayed at 'Location Selection Preview'
  4. Terrain Profile Settings
  5. From other Novapoint Modules (not available for 'Water and Sewer' project)
    • Select the modules, elements of which are to be included in the profile presentation - see 'From other Novapoint Modules' for further details
  6. Drawing Style Settings - Choose a drawing standard from the predefined standards for longitudinal profile
    • Preview of the profile with the active profile drawing style is displayed at 'Longitudinal Profile Preview'
  7. Execute the function with the button 'Draw'
Tips:

  • Relevant help text (quick help) for the active parameter is displayed at the bottom of the dialog
  • Double click on the parameter set heading OR single click on the + / - sign to expand / collapse the parameter set

Terrain Profile Settings

Choice to present the surface of the existing wire-frames (other road, railway, etc. projects) as terrain surface.

  • Pre-requisite:
    1. Wire-frames available in the DTM at the instance of calculating the model (road, railway, channel, etc.)
    2. Only the wire-frames crossing the alignment shall be considered
    3. 'Groups and Feature Code Settings' at the instance of calculating the model (road, railway, channel, etc.)
  • The choice terrain surface doesn't treat the existing wire-frames as terrain surface while the choice surface for quantity calculation treats them as terrain surface - see 'Illustration - Terrain Profile'
Note:

  • The calculation settings of the model (road, railway, channel, etc.) controls the precision of terrain surface following the surface of wire-frames
  • Refer the following for calculation settings of the model (road, railway, channel, etc.)

Existing Objects/Elements

Mark the check box to include these additional elements/objects in the presentation.

Note:

  • The result is influenced by the following:
    1. Wire-frames, alignments, existing objects, etc., that were available in the DTM at the instance of calculating the model (road, railway, channel, etc.)
    2. 'Groups and Feature Code Settings' at the instance of calculating the model (road, railway, channel, etc.)

  • Wire frames crossing the alignment
  • Other alignments crossing the alignment of the active model (road, railway, channel, etc.)
    • A vertical line with a leader (to point the elevation) and label represent the crossing alignments
    • A label for alignment name, chainage, and elevation is also drawn
  • External alignments - the vertical geometry of desired alignments will be projected to the profile being presented
    • This feature displays the vertical geometry of other alignments in the same profile
    • E.g., Vertical alignment of Ramps, Interchanges, etc. in the profile of alignment of active model (road, railway, channel, etc.)
    • Use the ellipse button (Quadri lines) to select the alignments (having vertical geometry) available in the active DTM
    • The dialog 'Quadri Lines' will pop up with the list, mark the check box, and click 'OK'
  • Existing objects crossing the alignment
    • The cross-section of these will be as per the parameters defined in 'DTM Objects'
    • A label for size (height/diameter), chainage, and elevation is also drawn
  • Terrain offset - terrain profile at an offset from the alignment (left side and/or right side)

From Other Novapoint Modules

Choose the modules and define the settings to include them in the profile presentation

Water and Sewer

Mark the check box, to include the water and sewer elements in the profile presentation.

  • Use the ellipse button (Open) to open the dialog 'Water and Sewer'

Water and Sewer

  • Use the ellipse button (Open) to select the water and sewer project (*.NCP file)
  • Trench: Select the trenches from the pull down menu and click 'OK'

Tunnel Profile Lines

Mark the check box to include the tunnel profile lines in the profile presentation.

  • Use the ellipse button (Open) to open the dialog 'Draw Tunnel Profile Lines'

Draw Tunnel Profile Lines

  • Current Road Model - read from 'Project ID'
  • Tunnel Geometry File - use the ellipse button (Open) to select the tunnel geometry file (*.XML file)
  • Chainage Calculation Interval - Defines the interval for tunnel cross-section calculation
    • The cross-sections at these sections are accurately calculated and tunnel profile lines are generated by linear interpolation among the sections
  • Surfaces - Choose to present profile lines for inner surface, outer surface, OR both surfaces of the tunnel
  • Extreme Points - For the choice made at 'Surface', further selection options for the point(s) along which profile lines are to be generated and presented
    • Select the extreme points and click 'OK'
Note:

  • Ensure that the tunnel project has been designed for this model (road, railway, channel, etc.) as the tunnel profile lines will be recalculated considering the specified tunnel geometry file and the model (road, railway, channel, etc.)
  • The extreme points are calculated for a vertical/horizontal coordinate system (not rotated)
  • This means that if a symmetrical tunnel is rotated, the extreme top point is the point at the maximum elevation but not the point on the symmetrical axis
